Tequila, April Pet of the Month
Say hello to Tequila! He is a 17-year-old Domestic Shorthair who had a
bit of bad luck earlier this year. He found his head in the mouth of an
Akita. Poor Tequila had his mandible fractured. For the jaw to work
correctly it needs to line up properly, and this kind of break does not
heal correctly on its own. With cats, it usually requires having the
jaw wired shut, which did not seem like a good option for this old
fella. With dogs that have a broken jaw, they can be taped into place
so their tongue can just fit through to lap up food. However, with cats
it's a bit tricky with the tape muzzle due to their size.
Dr. Davis, who enjoys a challenge, devised her own version of the dog's
cat's tape muzzle. Tequila had to come in once a week for over a month
for muzzle changes. He always had a good spirit about the whole
situation, never having to be sedated. Tequila's owner was very
diligent with Tequila's recovery, always making sure he was eating and
drinking enough. At one point, Tequila was being syringe fed by his
dad. We commend Tequila's owner for giving his old kitty a fighting
chance and caring for him so vigilantly over this difficult period.
Tequila is now muzzle free and enjoying every meal. |
